“Did you ever stop to think,” said Pooh, “and forget to start again...” AA Milne.
This booklet was prepared for Lorna Tomkinson’s 60th birthday, 5th May 2007, and is a “part 1” of the story of the family, mainly the Stewart, Middleton, and Turnbull line, with an addition at the
end of the Whinfield line.
It is called “part 1”, as it relates to factual research and true results of our family, going back
wards. It has been a real-life detective story, and a fascinating one, with many more answers awaiting discovery. I had thought to tell it as I nutted it out, but that might be too long-winded, so I present it here in chronological order, which is logical, even though the story of the discovery of the story is an
interesting one in itself, but it jumps about in time like a tangled up puppet, and so may not be as read
ily followed. I make no presumptions, unless I mention so in print.
“Part 2” will be the Craigiehall and Newhalls lineage, from which we are descended, but for
which the missing link still stays hidden.
There have been numerous fascinating red-herrings along the way, some of which I’ll mention. The greater leaps toward newer discoveries I have made came after I ceased looking at plain names and figures on paper, and started to relate them to a timeline of the 1800s, placing people where we knew them to be, and when, and then looking at world events, and linking others up.
The Whinfield family feature twice- two cousin lines marrying into the Stewart or Turnbull line, so I will append the Whinfield lineage as I have researched it, at the end.
Many old letters seemed to have errors, a lot of which I was inclined to doubt at first, for a long time, but time has since proven them to be surprisingly accurate, especially relating to differing names. Once peices of the puzzle landed in the right places, the letters took on a new context, and helped shed more light into the mysteries. I am sure this could be rewritten in a more interesting way than I am about to present, but it is meant to be factual, initially. The internet has helped a lot, but it can also help you to make mistakes doubly quickly, so I have done my best to verify everything, and have quoted sources, so others may recheck my data, and hopefully retrace my steps and discover even more!
Because of the numerous mysteries in the family, I have tried to trace or locate as many ‘cousin lines’as possible in the hope they could shed more light upon us, but we’re still largely in the dark!
Happy reading! Ian

William Stewart of Alyth, Perthshire, and his Descendants
William Stewart was an elusive character, for me.He spent time in Perthshire, where he married Jean Anderson. The General Record Office of Scotland (GROS) data number for the marriage is 328/00 0003, FR873 1002, and it states William Stewart and Jean Anderson were married on the 12th Dec. 1794. The LDS church should have that on microfilm- but I have not yet found it.
The children of WILLIAM STEWART and JEAN ANDERSON were:
i. John2 Stewart, b. 16 Nov 1794, Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland.. The Old Parish Records, list his birth as GROS data 328/0030 0146, and his parents William Stewart/Jean Anderson with # FR 778 962. He was born in Alyth, Perthshire.
ii. Margaret Stewart, b. 07 Aug 1796, Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland.. The GROS data record for her birth is 328/0030 0161, born in Alyth, Perthshire. Her parents are listed as FR 786. (Family Record?)
2. iii. Isabella Stewart, b. 12 Feb 1801, Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland.; d. 12 Oct 1860, Jarrow, but buried in Jesmond, Northuberland.
iv. Janet Stewart, b. 08 Jun 1806, Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland.. The GROS (General Record Office of Scotland) data record number for her birth is 328/0030 0221.
At some time, William, and daughter Isabella, at least, moved south a few miles to Dundee, in what was then called Forfarshire, but is today known as Angus. At the time of Isabella’s wedding to a shipwright named David Turnbull, William’s occupation was listed as ‘weaver’ (ie of linen), and in the Old Parish Records (OPR, which the LDS Church holds on microfilm) , they are descirbed as ‘of this parish’, mean
ing they have been there for
some shortish space of time,
at least.
It is generally accept-ed that people in the 1700s
and 1800s did not move
around much, so a shift of 20
or 30 miles may be unusual to some families. In this case,
the family did not seem to stay still much at all, which made searching for them all
the more difficult, but that in itself suggests more evidence
may be somewhere to back
up that idea.
The Pigots’ Trade
Directory of Scotland for 1825-6 does not mention any William Stewart, weaver, or any other occupation, living in Dundee, or Alyth. Nor for
that matter does it list any David Turnbull of any occu-pation.
The 1837 Angus and Fife Trade Directories
are similarly blank for both

names. What does that tell us? Either the directories were incomplete or wrong, or the people in them were absent at the time, having moved elsewhere, or they were insignificant, so were not mentioned as tradesmen.
A specific David Turnbull was born in Dundee, Angus, in 1804, according to various papers. He is listed as a shipwright, or a ship’s carpenter, in various sources. He and Isabella Stewart were married on 19 Dec. 1823. A copy of the transcription from the OPR is below.
Marriage: 19 Dec 1823, Dundee, Angus, Scotland (Source: Old Parish Records, 1 Parish reg-isters,1823, Church of Scotland. Parish Church of Dundee, LDS film 0993402 Batch C112828 , LDS 0993403 Batch C112829, LDS 0993404 Batch M112825,.
Parties Married David Turnbull, Carpenter & Isobel , daur of Willm. Stewart, Weaver, both in this parish, 19 Dec.
David Turnbull, the shipwright, remained named David Turnbull, all his life.
The Old Parish Records are very good in some cases, listing which relation children may have been named after, when born, providing the minister kept his bookwork in order. IN Scotland a general naming pattern tended to emerge, with the first son being named after his father or grandfather, the second son fol-lowing the other name, the third being named after an older uncle, and so on, and with girls it was similar. Frequently, i.e. almost all the time, a girl upon marrying, would retain her maiden name as a second name, and append her husband’s surname on the end, as her new surname. Isabella Stewart, therefore became upon marriage, Isabella Stewart Turnbull, where Turnbull is her surname. The seven children of ISABELLA STEWART and DAVID TURNBULL were all listed in the OPR as fol-lows:
i. William Stewart3 Turnbull, b. 11 Jan 1825, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. I found no subsequent record of William (named after his maternal grandfather) at all. I presume he died young. [Note-as at 2009, I found his death noted in the OPRs, aged approx 12 months]
David, the next son, always insisted he was the eldest of the family- this is mentioned in many letters.
ii. David Turnbull, b. 12 Jul 1826, (bapt. 20th).Dundee, Angus, Scotland; d. 02 Dec 1864, At Sea nr Bombay, buried 2/12/1864 at Jesmond, Nthumbl’d. David was named after his father, and later in life changed his name thrice as will be shown- firstly David Turnbull as he was christened, secondly as David White Ridley Turnbull, which sounds ridiculous, and I have found absolutely no connection with the famed White Ridley families of the time, but that is how he appeared at least twice, (1848 & 49) thirdly as David Turnbull Stewart (late 1850s and onwards), and occasionally as David Stewart (1860s). This is the bit of factual data that was the key to opening the story. This David married Frances Middleton.
Below (well, next page) is the OPR record for his birth in Dundee.
iii. Janet Stewart Turnbull, b. 01 Jun 1829, Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Like William, Janet does not feature in any subsequent records. She was noted in the OPR for her christening as having been named after her maternal aunt, and she did have an aunt Janet Stewart. [Note-at at 2010, I found her death register in the Old Parish Records in Scotland-she died in 1835]
iv. John Sturrock Turnbull . b. 8th Jan. 1832. There was a John Turnbull, a ships Captain, operating in the mid 1850s between Newcastle & Aberdeen, as advertised in old directories. I don’t know if that one is our one/this one. He lived in Northumberland. Old letters mention more than once that David had a brother John (Jack) who was a ship’s captain, who in a fit of temper, threw a man overboard and he drowned. Feariing the authorities, John/Jack fled to who knows where, possibly the West Indies or USA, leaving behind a wife and some family, and he was never heard of again. It would seem that this may be that John/Jack. Unfortunately, John Turnbull, or John Stewart if he chose to change his name, was not a rare name, and locating him in the trade directories of either Scotland, or Northumberland, gives you many inconclusive choices. [Note-some progress made here in 2011 in shipping records-but inconclusive]
. v. Helen Pullar Turnbull, b. 04 Apr 1835, Dundee, Angus, Scotland; d. 30 Oct 1921, 5 Benton tce, Newcastle, Northumberland. Helen was christened Helen, and was named so in a couple of the census-es, but mostly she was known as Ellen. I do not know where the Pullar came in. It was a family in Dundee at the time, though. Ellen is quoted as having talked a lot in her later life about having spent time as a child in the area around Craigiehall. We have letters mentioning this to Effie Whinfield, Ellen’s grandson’s wife in 1921. Ellen married Thomas Miller, as shown later.
Below is the OPR for her birth.
vi. George Stuart Turnbull, b. 15 Feb 1838, Dundee, Angus, Scotland; d. 30 Apr 1895, East Plumstead, Woolwich, London, UK.. George was not christened with Stuart, he was just George, but paper-work in the 1870s and 80s- his own two marriages, and two others in which he was a witness, are signed George S Turnbull, George Stewart Turnbull, or George Stuart Turnbull. George married twice- once to the widow Amelia Smith on 13 Sep 1863 in Northumberland- and after her death he married Eliza Lester Curtis on 29 Mar 1875 in Kent. He may have had a daughter Lily to Amelia, but he and Eliza were childless. [Note after his death, Eliza remarried-still childless though-I have their certificates, as at 2011]
vii. Isabella Turnbull, b. 11 Feb 1848, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Scotland; d. Mabye 1914 at Newbery. Note that Isabella was born in Edinburgh, not Dundee. That may have been because the family was enroute between Dundee and elsewhere, or they may have been living in Edinburgh. Isabella was born just a few months before her oldest living brother David married Frances Middleton in Newcastle. In later censuses and on her marriage certificate, she signs as Isabelle Stuart Turnbull. She married Frank Punter in Woolwich (London dockyard area) on 18 May 1879.
[Note-in 2010 I found a birth registry for another son, named William, born 1844-ish, and died about 10 months later]
The family of David and Isabella Turnbull and five of the seven children move about quite a lot for a family of that era. They ‘appear’ to stay in Dundee while the most of children are born - from 1823 to 1840, but this may not be what actually happened.
Censuses of the time will paint a bit of a picture:
In 1838, they were in Dundee, where George was born.
In 1841, the census at
right shows the family, minus
William and Janet who we’ll presume have died, resident
in LongBenton parish, Castle
East, Northumberland, which
is in Tynemouth area, close to
Newcastle. The ages will not
be accurate as in that cen-sus, they were often rounded
down to the nearest five years. It calls David the father a
carpenter, and all were born
in Scotland. The film and
folio number for the page is
HO107/822/5.p.17.
David the son must have left home in 1842 or thereabouts, aged 16, and obtained an education of some substance, as well as having spent time in the West In-dies, eventaully owning one or more sugar plantations-
whether by hard work or by inheritance, maybe we will one day learn. He ther must have made one or more trips back from the West Indies in the 1840s, settling in the Newcastle area of Northumberland.
In early 1848, the parents at least, were in Edinburgh where Isabella was born.
They then could have made the trip (but maybe didn’t) down to Newcastle where
David White Ridley Turnbull married Frances Whitfield Middleton in November
1848. Witnesses were Frances’ sister Mary Anne, and a fellow, but not any
of David’s brothers. Could there have been some friction over the wedding
or the name? David was 22 when he married the 20 year-old Frances.

The wedding certificate of David WR Turnbull and Frances Middleton, Nov. 1848:
The transcription is : 11 Nov 1848 in Newcastle, Northumberland, Parish Church, Par. of St John, Newcastle upon Tyne, Marriage, Novr 11th 1848, David White Ridley Turnbull, full age, bachelor, Sugar Planter, living in this parish at the time of the marriage, son of Robert White Ridley Turnbull, Banker; AND Frances Middleton, 20 years, spinster, of Wallsend parish, dau of Henry Middleton, Agent.Signed by DWR Turnbull & Frances Middleton, witnesses were Thomas Elder, Mary Ann Middleton [Frances’ younger sis-ter] & Ann Fisher.
Intuition: Initially we all seemed to feel that it could
not be anyone we knew, due to the ‘weird’ name, DWRT. That marriage cert has
been helpful and a nuisance at the same time. I have seen other certs with absolute inaccuracies, as if the transcriber on the day wrote the line from
a different wedding down into the one we received.Frances, of Wallsend, sister
Mary Ann Middleton, Frances’ age- all fit- but her father was previously and
latterly a railway station master, not an “agent”. DWRT, lists his name the
same as that when their son David Henry Turnbull was born in Wallsend. [named
after both grandfathers] He was formerly a Planter- that was a sugar plantation
owner at the time- that is OK. His father being a Robert White Ridley Turnbull,
Banker, is all fictitious as far as I am concerned. No RWRT exists in any
UK search-es of any kind, nor does he appear as a person, let alone a banker,
in any Northumberland trade & household directories of the time.
The Newcastle Courant newspaper Nov. 17th 1848, page 4, (marriage) “At St
John’s Church on the 11th inst, David White Ridley Turnbull esq of the island
of Porto Rico, West Indies, to Frances, daughter of Mr Henry Middleton of
Wallsend.” This could be true, or the Porto Rico bit may be typical ‘near
enough’ journalism. Anyhow, David Turnbull with assorted or fictitious middle
names, married Frances Middleton, daughter of a railway station master.
Frances Turnbull fell pregnant almost immediately, and in mid August 1849- nine months and one week later- a son, named after both grandfathers, David Turnbull, and Henry Middleton, was born in Wallsend. David Henry Turnbull was to follow his father’s mysterious surname changing, and though born DH Turnbull in 1849, by 1860 he was known as David H Stewart, and post 1880, he was known as David H Middleton-Stewart with a hyphen.
The 1851 census for Northumberland has David and Frances Turnbull with son David Henry Turn-bull all living at the railway stationwith Frances’ parents, the Middletons. The 1851 census for Scotland has David’s parents, David and Isabella Turnbull, plus children John, aged 19, George, 12, Helen, 14, and Isabella, 3, living at 91, number 8 Newport St, Edinburgh, St Cuthbert parish. David is listed as born in
Dundee, and Isabella as born in Alyth, Perthshire. David’s profession is ship carpenter.
Below, the birth certificate of David Henry Turnbull, of Wallsend, in 1849, who
later became DH Middleton-Stewart. Son of David White Ridley Turnbull and
Frances Whitfield Middleton. David’s occupa-tion is ‘Planter’, once again, a sugar plantation owner.
Below is the aforementioned 1851 census sheet for Edinburgh, for David’s parents and siblings:
Below is the 1851 census sheet for David and Frances, living with her parents
at Wallsend railway station- there is also a lodger, but son David Henry is
not listed.( I couldn’t find him anywhere else either). Note that David is
listed as a West India Planter, and Henry is a Station Master:
David and Frances have a daughter, Mary J, called Minnie circa 1851, apparently
born in England, but Mary Turnbulls are plentiful in name, and I have not
been able to ‘guess’ which one she was, so far. She was named after her maternal
grandmother, Mary Middleton, Frances’ mother. [Note-I have Mary's birth
certificate now-in 2013]
Fast forward in time a bit, and David and Frances head to sea, to the West Indies,
and daughter Frances Ann Turnbull is born 19 July 1854, In some censuses she
is listed as born Cuba, others just say ‘West Indies’. The precise date comes
from a birthday book once owned by her granddaughter Frances Jane Whinfiled. [Note-as at 2013 I've identified the place as Mandanillo(sp?) in Cuba]
John William Turnbull is born 6th May 1855, possibly in the West Indies, though
records say it was in England I cannot locate him. The precise date comes
from the Ushaw College enrolement forms, where he attended in 1861-2. [Note-as
at 2009 I found his birth certificate, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne]
Circa 1858-9, the family of David Turnbull & Frances Turnbull return from abroad, having been in both the West Indies, and the East Indies (India), but by now they have a new surname: “Stewart”.
David Turnbull, or David Stewart, sometimes David Turnbull Stewart, had a ‘yacht’ (ie a sailing boat of some scale or another) which he’d named “Fanny” after his wife Frances, on which he’d used to travel, we understand, to the West Indies & to India, for business dealings. He sold it, but while on its way to the new owners, it was in a collision with another ship or boat called the Carnarvon, and it sank. It was uninsured, and a great financial loss. This was in 1860. Travel by ship was expensive, and slow, in those days.
By 1858, Ellen Turnbull has moved out from home with David and Isabella Turnbull,
and down to Northumberland, where she met a young Thomas Miller, and they
married on New Year’s Eve, 1858, she was about 22. Her certificate is below,
and her father is listed as a ship carpenter, and brother George was a witness:
By 1859, if not sooner, the family of David and Isabella Turnbull and remaining Scottish children had moved back down to Northumberland, and Isabella, the mother, nee Stewart, died in October 1860. This is in no searchable public records- she died 12 Oct 1860 in Jarrow, but was buried in Jesmond, Nor-thuberland (Source: (1) Gravestone at Jesmond, “Isabella Stewart Turnbull, (beloved mother of David Turnbull Stewart), died Oct 12th 1860, aged 59 years.”, (2) Newcastle Courant newspaper Friday Oct. 19th 1860, (death) “ at Jarrow, in Todds buildings, on the 12th inst, aged 60, Isabella, wife of Mr David Turn-bull, shipwright.”, (3) Church records, in the 1930s, a genealogist found a record of Isabella’s burial, but all it says other than what is on the tomb, is that she was “of Jarrow”.).
Francis James Stewart was born , and died at sea, off the coast of Aden (which is near Saudi Arabia) in September 1859, though he is buired in the family plot at Jesmond. Frances Stewart and David Turnbull Stewart are living at the Elswick parish of Newcastle, and the fam-ily has grown. David Stewart has several patents registered in his name- relating to steam-driven cotton-spinning machinery and a rock crusher . The patents list him as ‘from Bombay, India, and Newcastle, Northumberland’, in the 1859 patents, and ‘from Newcastle’ in the 1860 one, so it would seem they have settled briefly in England again.
Mr Stewart owned the famous racehorse ‘Joey Jones’ which won the Northumberland
Plate, a trophy of quite significant value- from 1860 to 1863-not unlike the
Melbourne Cup in Australia. The prize was quite a bit of money, then, and
of course, horse riding was one of the main means of transportation. The newspaper
records only name him as Mr Stewart of Newcastle. He would have had a trainer,
and would most likely not have done the training himself. Joey Jones also
won the Tyne Handicap in 1860. Alice Flor-ence nee Nicholls, his daughter in law, had a silk print of that horse until
the 1930s when it ‘broke’.
Joey Jones, the horse, is immortalised in Geordie folklore via the song named after him and his win:
Joey Jones by George Ridley Sum shooted oot for Peggy Taft,
(Tune= Pat of Mullingar ) And some for Underhand;
Aw’m gan ti sing ye a sang, An’ when they reached the top o’
If ye’ll but list ti’ me the hill,
Aw divent intent ti’keep ye lang, Doyle heard Tom Aldercroft say
An’ that ye’ll plainly see; Aw dare lay a fiver that
Its all aboot young Joey Jones Aw win thi’ plate thi-day!
He wun the Northumberland Plate, Cumin roond he Morpeth turn,
He was bred at Deckham Hall, Joey keepin’ up his fame
Just up throo the gate Says Doyle ti Tommy Aldcroft-
Chorus: Noo wha’s yor little game?
For he jogs along, he canter’d along, Says Aldcroft-Aw mean ti’ win
He lick’d them all see fine, The Plate this very day!
He was bred at Gyetshead, Yes but says Doyle it’s Joey Jones,
He’s the pride of Coaly Tyne. A fiver aw will lay.
Joey ran at the spring meetings. Number eleven was puttin up.
He was beaten by the Jim, The people stood amazed.
Hadlow, that belangs Gaylad, Fobert he luiked vary white,
Said Joey wasn’t game; An Jackson almost crazed;
So they sent him off ti’ Richmond, Little Osborne luiked for his Wildman,

Then Watson fetched him here, Doefoot got a nasty kick,
An’ gov them a regular Yorkshire bite. An’ Joey wun in style.
Noo when the horses started,
An’ was cumin past the stand,
David and Frances Stewart had the son Francis Ben Stewart on 27 Feb 1860 in Jesmond, named partly from his deceased brother Frances James. He was baptised on 28th March 1860 in St Marys Cathe-dral Newcastle upon Tyne. According to church records, his Godparents were George Turnbull and Isabella Turnbull, who were his aunt and uncle, both still unmarried at this stage. His parents were listed as David Turnbull Stewart and Isabella formerly Middleton.
By the 1861 census, the family was living at 5 Wentworth Place, Newcastle upon Tyne, in the
Elswick civil parish. David T Stewart is a Civil Engineer now, the
children are all schol-ars, daughter Frances was born in Cuba, and
they have two servants-Carmax Stewart, a 50
year-old married West Indian, also born in Cuba, and Margaret Todd, a Scot,
for domestic help.
What is amusing is that Frances Ann Stewart, listed there with her parents, is
also listed with her grandparents, the Middletons, the same night of the census,
at Shincliffe Railway Station. They list her as having been born in Cuba West
Indies also, and very clearly she is Frances Stewart, with no mention of Turnbull..
That same 1961 census has David Turnbull the (now) widower and shipwright, living as head of the household, with his last two single children, George and Isabella at home with him. Immediately next door are his married daughter Ellen and Thomas Miller and their family in Jarrow.
Margaret Jessie Stewart was born to David T and Frances Stewart, on the 08 Mar 1862, but she died one year later in March 1863, and is buried at Jesmond. Her godmother was Margaret Wilkinson. She was baptised at St Mary’s cathedral, Newcastle.
David Turnbull Stewart and Frances Stewart enrol their two oldest sons David Henry and John William at Ushaw College, Durham. Ushaw College records list under ‘Arrivals’ on July 14th 1863- David Stewart, aged 13 (born Aug 31st), and John Stewart, aged 8 (born May 6th), both from Newcastle. They stayed until July 14th 1864. That’s it. (copy of Ushaw letter held by I.S-K) Nowdays is is a Catholic semi-nary, but it was a school then.
On the 19th May 1864, Louisa Bigger Stewart was born to David and Frances. She was baptised in June in St Mary’s cathedral, Newcastle. Her godparents were Ellen Turnbull and David Stewart. This may be Ellen (now Miller) the aunt, and David Henry, her elder brother, now aged 16. Louisa does not feature after that, except that I found a census of 1871 with her namesake, living with, or rather, adopted by a Scot Annie Willmer (b.1833, Perthshire, Scot.).
David Henry was supposedly taken from school, in July 1864 and sent on to India, to prepare for his father’s arrival. Apparently the family all went out there then, according to legend. Certainly none of them are in UK for the 1871 census. Apparently David T Stewart sailed his ship to the West Indies, to sell up the family’s interests there, and having done that, he headed to Bombay. Apparently the ship sank, just off the coast, and he drowned. Various stories circulate about him having only one arm (having lost the other in an accident with one of the crushing machines he built), and that he refused to release a bag of diamonds he was holding, which might have been payment for the West Indies plantations, and that he drowned just as help arrived. It is possible his son David Henry saw this. His ship’s trunk and writing cabi-net (engraved ‘DS’) survived the shipwreck.
The tomb at Jesmond mentions David Turnbull Stewart died on 2 Dec. 1864, at sea. Maybe it was due to that that Louisa was adopted out. It is unclear after this who stayed where.
George Turnbull, the youngest brother, born in Dundee married in 1863.
Right, born David Turnbull, later known as David Turnbull Stewart, or just David Stewart, the inventor, yacht
and plantation and racehorse owner,
and father of eight.
B. 1826 Dundee, Angus.
D. 1864 at sea near India. Buried at Jesmond.
Left, Frances Whitfield Middleton, mother of eight, and wife of David with the varying surnames.
Frances’ daughter was named Frances
Ann. Frances Ann named her daughter Frances Jane. Frances Jane had only a
son, William, as far as I know, but she was not just the third Frances- Frances Middleton’s mother, Mary Clegg, had a
mother named Frances Whitfield, born on 25th January, 1761, in Alston, Cum-berland, and she was the daughter of a
Frances, as well.
Frances was one of three siblings, the
others being Henry Whitfield Middleton, and Mary Anne Middleton (who was witness at Frances’ wedding to David Turnbull). Henry, their father was a wid-ower, his first wife having been a Mary as well. Mary Ann Middleton married a
William Hogg, and they named their second daughter Frances. (Their eldest was called Mary Ann, after her mother).
David Turnbull, their father, the shipwright, died in June 1864, alone, as the family were elsewhere.
Here is George’s wedding certificate- note he is calling himself Stuart as a
second name, and he even gives his father David, the shipwright, Stuart as
a second name.
Fast forward in time a little, and Henry Middleton dies in 1866 at Shincliffe Railway Station:

This is the 1871 census page for Louisa Stewart, adopted by the widow Annie Wilmer

The Wilmers were connected or involved in some way with the Stewarts-I am
not sure how, just yet]
Right, Frances Ann Turnbull-Stewart, second daughter of David, and Frances, nee Middleton, taken on her wedding day-28th June 1876, to widower Richard Anthony Whinfield.
Frances’ brother John William
Turnbull Stewart is one of the witnesses,
so he, at least, was back in England again. David Henry would have been in India,
entrenched as a stationmaster, the same profession as his grandfather Henry Mid-
dleton.
Richard Whinfield had four children from his first marriage- Raymond Wid-drington, Richard Anthony, Charles Freder-ick, and Amelia Georgina, named after her mother and Richard’s wife. Amelia, their mother died following labour a year after Amelia Georgina was born.
Frances Ann and Richard went on to have eight children.
Below is their marriage certificate:
Frances Turnbull, nee Middleton, who was born 23 Aug 1829 at Chirton, Northumberland, does not seem to appear in any censuses in UK after 1861. Her daughter-in-law Elizabeth Janet O’Grady (who married DH Stewart) says that Frances was present at their wedding, and that she dies in Bombay sometime a year or two later, but there is no record in India that I could find of this happening.
Frances may have returned to England, and died there, but I have not been
able to find any record of that.
Alice Florence Stewart, the second wife of Frank Ben Stewart mentions that
Frank (Frances Ben) came out to India of his own accord in 1882. That would
mean he should have been in UK in 1871 and 1881, but he is not.
John William Turnbull Stewart, brother to Frank, and Frances Ann and David
Henry, went to India, and married out there. He married Winnifred Mary O’Grady,
sister to DH’s wife Elizabeth Janet O’Grady.
David Henry is reputed to have spent most of his life in India, but although
I have searched many business, civil and government directories from 1865
to 1895, I can find no mention of him IN THEM. (yet).
Above, the Indian Empire, and below, the Indian Railway system circa 1893.
Anyhow, David Henry, now knows as DH Stewart, spent time in India. He was apparently
offered various promotions, but was happy to remain stationmaster at Poona
(now Pune) in ther Central Provinces. He was a confirmed bachelor, and one
day, attending a dance with some friends, a name was drawn out of a hat, and
that was Lela, or Elizabeth O’Grady. They met in February or March, and were
married in July. Lela insists it was in 1881, and that Charles, her son, was
born in 1882, but I could find no record of it in the India Records Office,
nor on LDS microfilm of all Indian records, nor could I fathom the name of
the town they supposedly married, regardsles of the year, and I checked all
for ten years either side of that date.
Right, the baptismal certificate of Charles Edward Middleton-Stewart in 1881.
This means that David Henry dropped the Turnbull part of his name, and added Middleton with a hyphen, by about 1880. I checked for Stewarts, Turnbulls, Middletons, and all hyphen-ated comnbinations when I searched for the marriage, all with no luck.
John William Turnbull Stewart, DH’s brother, also toom Middleton-Stewart as a surname when he married
Winnie O’Grady in India. What could have caused this
name change- there seems a certain
clear desire to get away from Turnbull. It wouldn’t have been for money, as the
Middletons were not landed gentry by
any means.
DH M-S died 01 Aug 1897 in Poona, India (Source: India Record Office N/3/78 page 182. Entry tran-scribed by I.S-K 1983., burial Church of St Francis Xavier, Poona, died Aug
1st, David Henry Stewart, 47 years, Stationmaster, buried Aug 2nd by Fr Schroter,
cause unknown.). He married ELIZABETH JANET O’GRADY 07 Jul 1881 in Shegaon,
India, or some similarly spelled place. (Location unknown.), daughter of LIEUT
O’GRADY. She was born Abt. 1859 in Co Cork, Ireland, and died Abt. Feb 1935
in London orHull- don’t really know, just guessing..
Charles Edward Middleton-Stewart, the only child of Lela and DH M-S, was the
first in a line of a few generations to not be named David. He used to sign
his name Charlo. He says he asked his father about his name and that he was
named Charles Edward as he would have a responsibility to build up the family
fortunes and name, unlike his namesake who lost it all.
That meant not much to me, until I learned that the namesake in question was Charles Edward Stuart,
otherwise known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, or the Young Pretender, who had a number of failed attempts to
regain the throne of Scotland for the Scots, who did ‘not appreciate’ the English
rule. The final straw came at the battle of Culloden in 1745, when the English
defeated the Scots, so it all meant a reference to this Jacobite time in Scottish
history- what a responsibility to foster upon an only child!
The term Jacobite came from the latin word for James- Jacobus- as King James
of Scotland was a fa-voured monarch. Jacobites came to be the word by which his supporterd were known. So, it is another hunch of mine, looking at the whole name changing piece from
afar, that perhaps we always were Stewarts, and Stewarts of Craigiehall and its misfortunes, and
that as loyal supporters of the Scottish throne and Bonnie Prince Charlie, when he fell, and the Jacobites were
persecuted by the English, and many were transported to America for their
‘crimes’ some of our lot changed their surname to the ‘safer’ boorder name
of Turnbull, around 1745-50.
They were then Turnbulls, as I have discovered them and listed them in the previous pages. Then,
about 100 years later, when the coast was clear, so-to-speak, the eldest son had a duty to rename his family
Stewarts, as they were, and to continue that line.
The second eldest (which would have been John the supposed ship’s captain)- well he took off and that story lies with him.
The next- Helen- became Ellen, and married Thomas Miller. Their daughter Isabella Jane, (named after Ellen’s mother Isabella Stewart Turnbull) married James Moore Hopper Whinfield, the youngest brother of Richard Anthony Whinfield (husband of Frances Ann Turnbull-Stewart). Parts of Ellen’s family kept Stewart as a christian name.
The next- George Turnbull- adopted Stuart as a second name, but retained Turnbull as a surname as that was all he knew. The certificates will spell out George’s life as an engineer near the docks.
The youngest- Isabella- took Stuart, or Stewart, as a second name also- more ahead.
So, I feel that explanation is feasible. DNA testing may help open up new branches,
perhaps with descendants of the Ship Captain John, or something, but so far this aspect of the
story is just my own plausible conjecture. Ian
[Note - it is fascinating that Angus Stewart, Alan M-S's son has DNA in common
with several people surnamed Turnbull. In 2012, I contacted many of them,
and reached a blank wall as fas as any possible fitting into our known tree
branches.]
The lineage of the children of Frances Middleton amd David Turnbull Stewart I will continue with less verbosity ahead.
Frances Ann T-S’ family will become clear, with the appended Whinfield lineage.
The remainder of the siblings will be as above with David.
Their uncle, George Stuart Turnbull, married Amelia Smith in 1863. They may have has a daughter Lily. Following Amelia’s death, George moved to London area where Isabella was.
On 29 Mar 1875, George married Eliza Lester Curtis in Kent. George and Eliza were witnesses at the wedding of George’s sister Isabella to Frank Punter. George died in Woolwich on 30 April 1895- his sis-ter Isabella, now Isabella Punter, was the informant. William Hammond, some fourteen years her junior, had been boarding with them for about siz years, and he and Eliza married on 18th Dec. 1897. Eliza Hammond died in march 1913, in Woolwich, childless.
Below, the marriage certificate of George and widow Amelia- he signs his name with Stuart in it..
Below, the marriage certificate for George Stewart Turnbull- (at least he’s fixed the spelling now!)- and Eliza Lester Curtis It is clear to see that Isabelle Stewart Turnbull, his sister, is one of the witnesses- she tended to call herrself

John William Turnbull Stewart, later Middleton-Stewart was born 06 May 1855 in England,(acc to 1861 census), ( or West Indies acc. to Lela), [NB as of 2010 I have his birth certificate-from Northumberland, born as John William Turnbull] and died Aug 1905 in India (Source: Letter from Charlo to Effie Whinfield dated 14 Oct 1935, “then of course there is the curse, which is supposed to be placed on the sons of the third generation (I think) which decreed that all the sons of that generation should die in August and before they reached or completed fifty years of age. Strangely enough this was fulfilled, because your your father, Uncle Jack,[John William] and Uncle Ben [Frank] all died in August, but Ben was just over 50.). John married WINNIE MARY O’GRADY in Bombay, according to Lela in a letter she wrote in 1934/5.. She was born 24 May (Source: ‘Funeral’ type pre-death card from Winnie to sons David,Jack & Ben, held by John M-S, copy with I.S-K., “do not grieve overmuch for me my darlings but pray much for me. Besides the Masses, you know I will have said for me I beg from you a Mass, or the attendance of Mass, every year, on or about my Birthday 24th May, at which receive Communion, pray for me and make some good resolu-tions for the coming year.Do not my sons drift apart when I am gone, you will sometimes need a Brothers love- remember Mother is still the link between you and is watching and praying for you.(and more).), and died Abt. 1932 in Possibly England- date is only vague. Could be 1930? (Source: Letter from Alice Florence nee Nicholls, Ben’s widow, to Charlo, circa 1935.).
There was a JW Stewart listed as a crane driver, working for the Indian Railways in the Thackers Directory for India, 1895.
Children of JOHN M-S and WINNIE O’GRADY are:
i. David MIDDLETON-STEWART, b. Unknown; d. Unknown, Australia? no idea.. According to Charlo, David was “an out and out neer-do-well, away in Australia somewhere probably win-ning beer drinking competitions, the only thing he was ever good at” (Quoted in Oct. 1935 letter to Effie Whinfield)
A letter from Lela to Charlo (26th January 1935) says” Look at David and Frank, my sister Winnie’s sons. David through his own folly was down and out here in London, and in Roughton House- a place for down and outs who must pay 1/6 for a bed and I think a cup of tea in the morning- within five minutes of receiving their letter from there I went to them, took them to a restaurant; talked things over, I spent a lot of money over them, took them to my darling little home in Ireland, did my best for them, but David spoiled the chance of a lifetime that came to Frank (i.e.Ben). It is a long story- but I was disgusted (underlined) with David’s behaviour. (She doesn’t say what the chance was, nor what his behaviour was). Frank joined the
I.R.A. I never saw him again- I heard he was wounded etc. Then David went off to Australia, he had a num-ber of girls at the boat to wish him goodbye-probably he told them all separately he would marry as soon as
he could. I never rec’d a single p.c. (post card) from him. Ingratitude is my fate- I am paying the debt in this life for something I must have done in a previous existance before my reincarnation. In my next life I will have “paid the debt” and hope for better treatment. Well, my dear, I am jolly hungry so must say good
night-
With love, your ever loving mother, Lela.”

Francis Ben Stewart was born 27 Feb 1860 in Jesmond, England, and died 23 Aug 1919 in Poona, India. bur. St Patrick’s Cathedral. Died of paralysis (Source: India Record Office N/3/121 page 261. Entry tran-scribed by I.S-K 1983..). He married (1) ELLEN NELLIE NOLAN 16 Aug 1883 in St Thomas’ cathedral, Bombay, India (Source: India Record Office N/3/57 page 218. Entry transcribed by I.S-K 1983..). She was born Abt. 1858 . As she was aged 50 at her death, and died 06 Jul 1908 in Poona, India, buried St Sepul-chre’s cemetery on 7th. Chaplian WFM Hamilton. (Source: India Record Office N/3/100 page 48. Entry transcribed by I.S-K 1983..). He married (2) ALICE FLORENCE NICHOLLS 12 Apr 1909 in St Marys RC, Poona, India (Source: India Record Office N/3/101 page 289. Entry transcribed by I.S-K 1983., Also lists respective father’s names as David Turnbull Stewart, and John Nicholls. Frank was aged 49, widower, and Alice was 28, spinster.). She was born Abt. 1881 (Source: She was a spinster aged 28 at her marriage to Frank.), and died Aft. 1936 in UK possibly.
According to a letter from Alice, his wife (widow), to Charlo, circa 1935, Ben came out to India on his own in 1884, aged 23. That would mean he was in UK, for the 1871 & 1881 censuses, but I found no trace of any Frank, Francis, or Ben Stewart (or any variation of FB Stewart) born in Newcastle in 1861 in either census. He is in the 1861 census with his parents at Jesmond, aged almost 1. Did he go to India as a child with the rest of the family- he must have, unless he was sort of adopted by an aunt for a while. None of his siblings, seem to be in UK for the 1871 census, either- India perhaps. It doesn’t tie with what Alice wrote though.

He married GERTRUDE EDITH MARY (DI) ALLSOPP Bef. 1907 in South Africa, daughter of LEONARD ALLSOPP and ELIZABETH CATHRINE.... She was born 14 Nov 1888 in Ladysmith, South Africa (Source: Bapt. certificate, Baptised in the Wesleyan Church, Ladysmith, Dec 16, 1888, Gertrude Edith Mary, daughter of Leonard Webster John and Elizabeth Cathrine Allsopp, of Lesbelle (?), Ladysmith, birth date Decr 4th 1888, John Allsopp, Officiating Minister and grandfather, Wesleyan methodist Minister, Ladysmith, natal.), and died 1964 in South Africa.
Notes for DEPUTY INSP. GENERAL OF P CHARLES EDWARD MIDDLETON-STEWART: He was born in Dhond, India, as his father had been transferred there not long beforehand, according to a letter from his mother, where “you were born and christened Charles Edward before Stewart - Middleton” she worded it. (and it looks like she says “young Jack married [there]” but her writing is terrible.)
Charles was known as Charlo to a lot of people, and signed familiar letters accordingly.
Charles, in a letter to Effie Whinfield dated 14 Oct 1935, says he was born in India, and sent Home to be educated, returning to India to the Civil Service, Police Dept. (but that was a long while after his father’s death of 1897)
He got a commission in a regiment when the Boer War broke out, and felt he was one of the young
est Officers in the Boer war (18-ish at the beginning).
In the same letter he says he “ married at the age of 25 into the family of Allsopp beer but no money of theirs unfortunately comes our way. In 1907 my wife presented me with twin sons (named Ivor and Don-ald...). I came to India and was appointed an Officer in the Indian Police, and in due course my twin sons went to London University and Ivor took law and got into the army through the ‘varsity. He is just about to get his captaincy and next year when he goes Home on leave will be called to the Bar as a Barrister-at-Law. Donald took to engineering and got the degrees of A.C.G.I. and B.Sc. and I hope shortly will be A.M.I.C.E. also. He is in Burma and very probably my wife will accompany him Home next year about April when he goes on leave. Ivor the blighter recently married and asks me to be prepared to be a grandfather; I have another son Colin, only 13 years of age who is at school in South Africa under the care of my wife’s people. I am the only son of my father and (touch wood) am hale and hearty enough to have won two open tennis competitions recently as well as in golf despite the fact that I am about to become a grandfather. As Ivor is about six feet in height, I regret to say that I might have some difficulty in laying him over my knee and spanking him for turning me into a grandfather” (Charlo was just 5’6”)
The Indian Officer’s List for 1936, as well as the 1933 list lists most of his career. The “Historys of Service 1875-1955 Vol. 12” has also summarised it as follows: Joined Indian Police Service as Asst. District Supt 7th June 1909 till 1918.
On Military duty (WW1) 7 Nov 1918 to 4 June 1920. He was also declared District Superintendant of Police in Dec 1918.
Principal, Police Training School, Saugon, Apr 1928. Officiating Deputy Inspector General April 1932, and again March 1933, confirmed Nov. 1933, finally be-coming Deputy Inspector General of Central Province, India. War Service: RSA Field Force 1900-1902 (Boer War), Queen’s Medal with 3 clasps, King’s Medal with 2 clasps, Special promotion for an act of gallantry in the field. Natal Zulu Rebellion 1906. Zululand Field Force Medal with 1 clasp. Certificate of Commendation Afghan Campaign 1919. Staff of 2nd Division as Assistant Provosy Marshall in the Army”.
A letter from his mother, Lela, to him, mentions his wage toward the end as 550 pounds per annum.
He was in perfect health in Oct-Nov, if his letters reflect his state, prior to his sudden death in December 1935, aged 53(ish). Cause of Death: a) cardiac failure & (b) lobar pneumonia. I do not know conclusively where he is buried.

More About FRANCES ANN TURNBULL STEWART:
Comment 1: She called herself Frances Ann Turnbull-Stewart at the time of her marriage in 1876
Comment 2: On other censuses in England, she lists her birthplace as West Indies BS, about 1853 (BS is the current international abbreviation for Bahamas, not Barbados). Actually, I have since learned that it probably means “British Subject”.
Comment 3: 1881, 1881 census lists West Indies as her birthplace (no specific island)
Comment 4: 1861 census, she is listed as staying with her grandparents, the Middletons, at Shincliffe, Durham, and was born abt 1855, West Indies, Cuba. She’s also listed with her parents in Elswick, same details though. Miscellaneous: 1861, In the 1861 census, she is listed twice, but is called Frances Stewart in each of them. Resided: 1920, London we think
